Tick the most suitable answer in questions 1 and 2.
1. In addition to the rock particles, the soil contains:
(i) air and water
(ii) water and plants
(iii) minerals, organic matter, air and water
(iv) water, air and plants
Ans:- (iii) minerals, organic matter, air and water
2. The water holding capacity is the highest in:
(i) sandy soil
(ii) clayey soil
(iii) loamy soil
(iv) mixture of sand and loam
Ans:- (ii) clayey soil

4. Explain how soil is formed.
Ans:- Soil is formed due to the weathering of rocks. Weathering involves the physical breakdown and chemical decomposition of rocks by wind, water, and climatic changes. Over time, this process converts rocks into small particles, eventually forming a layer of soil.
5. How is clayey soil useful for crops?
Ans:- Clayey
soil is useful for crops because:
(i) It has excellent water-holding capacity.
(ii) It is rich in organic matter.
(iii) It is suitable for growing cereals like wheat.
(iv)Its water retention supports crops like paddy, which require more water.

7. Sketch the cross-section of soil and label the various layers.
(Illustration: A labeled cross-section of soil showing topsoil, subsoil, parent rock, and bedrock layers.)

8. Razia conducted an experiment in the field related to the rate of percolation.
Solution:-
Data:
Amount of water = 200 ml
Percolation time = 40 minutes
Calculation:
Percolation Rate = Amount of water / Percolation time
Percolation Rate = 200 ml / 40 min
= 5 ml/min
9. Explain how soil pollution and soil erosion can be prevented.
Ans:-
(i)To
control soil pollution:
(ii) Reduce the use of plastics.
(iii) Control the use of chemical
fertilizers and pesticides.
(iv) To prevent soil erosion:
(v) Plant more trees.
(vi) Stop deforestation and avoid overgrazing.
Class 7 Science Chapter 9 - Important Questions & Answers
Q1: What is soil and how is it formed?
Answer: Soil is the top layer of the Earth that supports plant life. It is formed by the breaking down of rocks due to weathering caused by wind, water, and temperature changes over millions of years.
Q2: What are the main components of soil?
Answer: The main components of soil are:
Organic matter (decayed plants and animals)
Water (moisture in soil)
Air (spaces between soil particles)
Living organisms (bacteria, earthworms, fungi)
Q3: What are the different types of soil?
Answer: The main types of soil are:
Clayey soil – Small particles, high water-holding capacity, used for pottery.
Loamy soil – A mixture of sand, silt, and clay; best for plant growth.
Q4: What is soil erosion and how can it be prevented?
Answer: Soil erosion is the removal of the top layer of soil by wind, water, or human activities. It can be prevented by:
Using proper farming techniques like crop rotation and terrace farming.
Avoiding deforestation.
Q5: Why is soil important for plants?
Answer: Soil is important for plants because:
It holds water needed for survival.
It anchors plant roots to prevent them from falling.
It houses beneficial microorganisms that help in plant growth.
Q6: What is the role of earthworms in the soil?
Answer: Earthworms improve soil quality by:
Decomposing organic matter, enriching nutrients.
Creating air spaces for plant roots.
FAQs on Soil
Q1: How is soil classified based on texture?
Answer: Soil is classified into sandy, clayey, and loamy soil based on the size of its particles.
Q2: What is humus?
Answer: Humus is the organic component of soil formed from decomposed plants and animals. It improves soil fertility and water retention.
Q3: How does soil affect water availability for plants?
Answer: Different soils hold water differently. Clayey soil retains more water, while sandy soil drains water quickly.
